March marks the carnival season in Wallonia and Nivelles of course join in, the whole city buzzing with fascinating characters, the Gilles. Summer is quieter but poetic with its carillon concerts, enchanting locals and visitors alike. Those looking for a journey back through time should make a detour via the Sainte-Gertrude Tower to learn about that fascinating lady, who became Belgium's very first abbess.
