March marks the carnival season in Wallonia and Nivelles of course join in, the whole city buzzing with fascinating characters, the Gilles. Summer is quieter but poetic with its carillon concerts, enchanting locals and visitors alike. Those looking for a journey back through time should make a detour via the Sainte-Gertrude Tower to learn about that fascinating lady, who became Belgium's very first abbess.
Carnival – Late February/Early March
Over the course of four days the town is full of festivities! Children’s carnival, schools’ carnival or even the carnival of the Aclots (inhabitants of Nivelles born intra muros and able to prove several generations of ancestors in Nivelles), the Gilles and their oranges continue to surprise you…
Carillon Concerts – July and August
An original and unusual concert is what internationally-renowned carillonneurs offer you every summer in Nivelles. Let yourself be lulled by the gentle melody of the carillon of St Gertrude’s Collegiate Church every Sunday.
Saint Gertrude’s Tour – Late September/Early October
St Gertrude’s Tour invites you to walk in the footsteps of one of the first abbess’ in Belgium. You’ll cross fields and towns while following an historical procession in period costume, led by a cart which dates from the 15th century..
