Majestic, impressive with its 240 running meters of facade, Charleroi Town Hall, inaugurated on October 18, 1936, is the work of the architect Joseph André.
Three heavy bronze doors open onto a hall of honor covered in marble. Seven high windows, separated by columns, and the balcony, topped by a large decorative attic, give full scope to the main facade. On either side of the bas-relief, which exalts the activity of the city, two sets of statues symbolize, on the right, the Administration governing the city and, on the left, Family.
The slate roof is decorated with 13 dormer windows and a campanile.
The interior is decorated in a sumptuous manner; it abounds with marble and copper, woodwork and sculptures.
The attic of the Town Hall is home to the Jules Destrée Museum, which can be visited on appointment. Another treasure to discover that is part of the building is the Belfry, a monument recognized as a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.
