Hydraulic lifts, mining sites, a ceramics museum... are amazing witnesses of the Industrial Era in La Louvière.

The Canal du Centre and its boat lifts

Listed by UNESCO, this structure amazes by its technology and its longevity. The 4 lifts, built at the beginning of the 19th century, help boats over a thousand tons to go over a drop of 66 metres on the Canal du Centre. Even more impressive is the fact they are hydraulically driven by the power of the water of the canal only. Com and discover this incredible site: a cruise maybe? Or would you prefer to rent an electric boat? Or cycle along the RAVel path.

The Bois du Luc mining site

Explore a mining town unique in Europe: industrial buildings, school, hospice, kiosk, workers' lodgings, church... Walking through this preserved microcosm, you will learn about the daily life of the mine, where the workers came from. This incredible testament of the Belgian industrial history is protected by UNESCO.

The Keramic ceramics centre

This museum space dedicated to ceramics was built on the site of the former Boch ceramic factory, a real institution in Belgium. Its contemporary architecture integrates a listed building, home to three bottle shaped kilns. Today, exceptional pieces are shown side by side by more common ones, witnesses of the economic and social importance of ceramics in La Louvière at the time.
