L'Espace Arthur Masson, dedicated to the Belgian writer Arthur Masson, offers an original visit in the heart of the beautiful Viroin valley in Belgium.
Located at the entrance of the village, this former square has been turned into an immersive experience. At the centre is a stunning fountain, created by two brothers Yves and Claude Rahir. Around are three building which used to be village's schools:
- The Girls' school, now home to L'Ecole d'Autrefois (School of Yesteryear)
- The Boys' school, no home to the Trignolles show
- The preschool, now home to a welcome desk and a cafeteria, Chez Toine
Chalk, blackboard, aprons, quills and ink: sit down, the lesson is about to start!
Trignolles: an audio-guided tour/show
This light and sound show features 11 scenes, complete with dialogues in Walloon, presenting life in the Ardenne countryside between 1930s and 60s. The concept? Anecdotes and little life stories lived by the characters of the Toinade (written by Arthur Masson). A leaflet filled with games and notes is given to families for this experience.
- Original dialogues in Walloon, translated into French, Dutch and English on the audioguides (available to individual visitors and groups)
- Activities in the school are in French for individual visitors, French and Dutch for groups
New activities
Enjoy a guided tour of the region on board of one of the superb Rétroberlines de Viroin: a 34 km drive in a vintage car through the local countryside and enchanting villages.
Visitors can enjoy this activity in July and August, at 10 am, 2 and 4 pm. Booking is mandatory.
Families
Discover two fun family activities lasting approximately 1h30.
- In true Sherlock Holmes spirit, seek who murdered young Adele in the Manor of misfortune,
- Go on a treasure hunt along a 3 km walk in the village of Treignes.
At L'Ecole d'Autrefois, come and enjoy an hour of lessons as in the old days: a unique experience to share with family or friends.
Put on your school uniform and have a look at the objects adorning the classroom: the blackboard, wooden benches, slates, ink pens and wells... but don’t get to distracted, the schoolmaster is about to start the lesson.
At the sound of the bell, let the scent of ink and chalk dust tranport you through time. School can be fun!
