  • Folklore and Tradition

The Procession de la Pucelette is a folkloric event bringing together history and tradition in Wasmes near Mons.

It tracks back to a 12th century legend: a dragon was then terrorising the region, attacking both men and cattle. Lord Gilles de Chin fought it and freed a young girl (La Pucelette) the beast was keeping prisoner.

This procession, one of the largest in the region, is said to retrace the journey taken by the injured dragon before dying.

  • Whit Monday: a young girl, chosen in the local population, is chosen to symbolise La Pucelette
  • Pentecost Tuesday: the procession starts from the Cambri church and carries Notre Dame de Wasmes along a 17 km walk
