At the confluence of the Flavion and the Molignée, stand the remains of the medieval fortress of Montaigle once a count's residence. Its Archaeological Museum is well worth a visit.
The ruins
A visit of Montaigle is a journey through time. With a bit of imagination, you will find yourself transported to the Middle Ages...
Today overgrown with vegetation, the ruins have retained their grandeur and beauty. The remains date from the 14th century (guided tours by appointment).
History
The discovery of flint tools on this site suggests it was already lived in in prehistoric times. Under the Roman Empire, a small garrison is thought to have been built there then the first castle around the year 900.
Archaeological Museum
At the foot of the ruins, the Archaeological Museum stretches over 100 m2 and retraces the history of the site through a themed and chronological exhibition presenting the artefacts discovered during digs:
- crossbow bolts
