Located near Dinant, this 12th century abbey is still very much active today (monastic life, concerts, cultural events...) and is very much worth the detour.

History

  • In 1152, Henry the Blind, count of Namur, gave the church to the Floreffe Norbertine. The monastery, born of this donation, became an abbey in 1200. Rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, pillaged by revolutionaries in 1794, the current buildings were sold in 1816 and turned into workshops.
  • Bought again in 1903 by French Norbertine, then in exile, the building were renovated from 1931 their Flemish counterpart, based in Tongerlo.
  • The abbey has a double indoor yard. The 17th century abbey quarters, reworked in 1747, are close to the guest quarters, which dates back to 1604. The former library, separated from the abbey is now a primary school.
