A magnificent building surrounded by water, Raeren castle invites you to discover thousands of ceramic objects retracing the history of what was once a major pottery centre.

Typical of eastern Belgium, the castle stands at the confluence of the Iter and Periol rivers, on the site of a former iron ore foundry. Facing Rhineland, this majestic fortress can be explored by crossing a stone bridge spanning the moat.

Over the centuries, Raeren Castle has often changed owners. The lord who built the first building in the middle of the 14th century is unknown. Since 1959, the castle is partially owned by the municipality. The Pottery Museum opened its doors here in 1963.

Pottery museum

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle of Raeren was one of the most important centers of pottery. The village lived from this craft and its fame spread all over the world.

Today, the Pottery Museum presents more than 2,000 objects tracing 500 years of the history of Rhine as well as contemporary ceramics.
