140 hectares wide, up to 125 m deep, the Quenast quarry is Europe's largest open-pit. Porphyry extraction started there as early as the 17th century. The site was known for its hard, resistant stone, used for road pavement in Belgium.

Today, porphyry is solely used for ballast and concaves.
