"What woman wants, Monkey can get for her"
It is said that any woman dreaming of getting married within the year will see her wish come true by caressing this little statue's head. If a couple does the same, they can hope to be expecting within the year too.
It is thought this monkey has been in Mons since 1843 at least, maybe even before that. Maybe since the Town Hall was built in the 15th century. it could have been placed on the façade as it is now or moved there from another side of the building. Unless the opening of the tavern, in the basement, is part of its history. It holds many mysteries still...
