Europe still bears the scars of the first world war. To get an idea of how much suffering took place in Wallonia, do stop by Ploegsteert where military cemeteries pay tribute to the 6,000 who fell in the region.

Memorial tourism - keeping history alive

There are no less than 20 war cemeteries by the First World War interpretative centre. They are kept pristine by the Imperial War Graves Commission.

The graves of the Commonwealth soldiers buried there can be distinguished by their rectangular tombstone, the superior frame slightly rounded. Stern but elegant.

Many come in pilgrimage there every year, leaving a few words in the registers available at the entrance of each cemetery.

Sponsor a Plugstreet Memory grave

Individuals, schools, companies... can sponsor a grave in one of the local cemeteries, which makes sure the tomb gets a commemorative ceremony, flowers, poppies or other memory gesture like historical search on the soldier's life.
