  • Folklore and Tradition

The Carnival of Charleroi, created in the 19th century, is one of the most expected folkloric events of the region. Come and join the fun!

The event started in 1890 as a mere neighborhood fête. At the time, the city would invite companies of Gilles from other regions to join in, having none of their own. It's only after the end of the Second World War that Charleroi finally had two associations.

The carnival now is an incredible symbol of joy, bringing all generations together. Folkloric characters, giant puppets, amazing costumes, drums, fifes and orchestras... Cheerfulness is all around. The festivities conclude with a bonfire on which a six metres high raven is burnt.
