Visit the Citadel of Dinant and take a stroll through centuries of history: from the sack of Dinant in 1466 to the First World War, not forgetting the Vauban era. This is the perfect opportunity to try HistoPad: a unique technological immersion into the past.

Explore the citadel

The Citadel of Dinant is one of the most emblematic historical sites in Wallonia. It was built on the site of an ancient fort constructed by Vauban, Louis XIV's architect-engineer, on the ruins of an 11th-century castle. Today, the fortress features a weapons and history museum and includes a space dedicated to the Great War.

The site is accessible from the city center via its staircase (408 steps) and cable car, and from the plateau behind the citadel (large parking lot).

It also offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Upper Meuse.

Espace 1914

In August 1914, the citadel witnessed terrible fighting between French and German troops. 100 years later, visitors can retrace this milestone in Belgian and European history thanks to Espace 1914.

Don't miss the reconstruction of an air-raid shelter collapsed by a bombing raid: thrills and a sense of disequilibrium are guaranteed.

Augmented Reality tour with HistoPad

Since June 2025, the Citadel of Dinant has been offering a unique cultural experience thanks to its HistoPad. This immersive augmented reality technology allows visitors to explore the site in an interactive way.

Explore the past of this iconic historic site through 13 time gates, each a key episode that shaped its history. Immersive, educational and fun, the tablet allows visitors to relive the fortress's highlights through a unique experience, accessible to all. This is included in the price of the visit.

Easy to use, HistoPad also is an excellent way to share the visit with children (the content is suitable for all ages) and visually impaired companions. The explanations provided are available in 8 languages.

Visit one of the most impressive fortresses in Belgium and enjoy its outstanding view on the Meuse valley.
