- The most beautiful villages of Wallonia
Barbençon is a beautiful village with a fascinating past, located in the province of Hainaut, a few kilometres from the French border. Its superb green setting and festive atmosphere are well worth stopping by.
The charm of old stones
Once the stronghold of the Lords of Barbençon, the village was known for its glassmaking and marble works. One of its streets is named ‘rue des Marbriers’. Take time to stroll through the historic heart of the village to appreciate its architecture, and make sure to pause at St Lambert Church, a Gothic and Renaissance building dating from the 16th century. Inside there are monuments dedicated to the old masters of glass and marble making, and the magnificent high altar and baptismal font reflect the village’s rich cultural past.
The beauty of the lake
After exploring the village, treat yourself to a relaxing break on the terrace overlooking the Barbençon Lake (and yes, you can fish there). From there, you will see the local castle and its ramparts. Feeling peckish? The Brasserie du Lac serves simple but tasty dishes. Its terrace is perfect to relax with a view on sunny days.
