Impressive. That is the only word for these steep stairs. From afar, they seem impossible to conquer. But once there, looking up, he challenge is irresistible.

The Montagne de Bueren: 374 steps, a 30% incline, listed in the top 10 of memorable stairs in the world. The site, open to all 24 hours a day, is a real star in Liège: it is lit with candles for the "Nocturne des Coteaux de la Citadelle" and covered with flowers for the "Bueren en fleur".

One of the most iconic sights in Liège, to say the least!

Part of the defence system of the city

In the 19th century, the Montagne de Bueren linked the military compound of the citadel to the town centre - the perfect shortcut for the garrison to come and defend Liège in the case of an invasion. The name of this incredible flight of stairs is a reminder of the failed coup by six hundred men of Franchimont on October 29th, 1468. Led by Vincent de Bueren and Gossuin de Streel, they tried to capture Charles the Bold and Louis XI.

The city of Liège regularly organises guided tours, should you want to know more - check the tourist office's website for information.
