Ancient carnival bonfires, ceremonies during which the ‘Bonhomme Hiver' (Winter Man) is traditionally burnt, are making a major comeback in modern day Wallonia. The most famous of these is undoubtedly the ‘Grand Feu’ at Bouge, close to the Walloon capital of Namur.
An old tradition
There, on the first Sunday of Lent, a colossal bonfire is lit (the largest of seven in total across the valley of Namur), and Spring’s official arrival is celebrated. The ceremony ends with a spectacular firework display, best viewed from the jutting walls of Namur’s towering stone citadel.
