Despite being neutral at the start of World War II, Belgium found themselves at war after the country was invaded by German forces on 10 May 1940.

The German tanks swept through the Ardennes, outflanked the French beyond the River Meuse. Occupation would last until the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, when American led troops succeeded to free the country.
