Situated on a promontory overlooking the Sambre Valley, the Floreffe Abbey enjoys the status of being listed as one of Wallonia’s Special Heritage Sites. The building, founded by Saint Norbert in 1121, contains many artistic, architectural and historic treasures.

Visiting the abbey’s church

The abbey, a 100 m long, was built between the 12th and 18th century. The church features stunning baroque stalls as well as an interesting museum in a medieval annexe. The latter presents a small video about the site. The guided tour of the church takes around an hour. Other parts of the Abbey can be visited on request.

  • Individual visits of the exterior site (without access to the church): all year round, by purchasing your guide booklet at the mill-brewery
  • Individual visits to the abbey church: from July to October 15, by purchasing your guide booklet at the mill-brewery
  • Combined visits to the exteriors and the abbey church: from July to December, by purchasing your guide booklets at the mill-brewery
  • Group visits with a guide: by reservation only, for a minimum of 15 people. Duration one hour. Visitd possible in French, Dutch and English. Guide included.
  • Complete special visits: with access to various places usually closed to the public (including the 18th century interiors, the old chapter house, abbey refectory, etc.). Duration: 2 hours. Visits are only possible with prior reservation, all year round on Wednesday afternoons and weekends (they can be organised at other times during school holidays). Groups of 15 people minimum.

Events are regularly organised on the abbey site: courses, exhibitions, events, festivities, concerts...

The brewery

Dating back to the 13th century, the Floreffe Abbey brewery-mill is the oldest industrial building in the province of Namur. Its appearance and configuration have hardly changed over the centuries...

Now a reception centre for visits to the abbey, the place also offers tastings of Floreffe beers, bread and cheeses - all made on the premises.
