From Villers-la-Ville to Louvain-la-Neuve, via Waterloo, La Hulpe and Genappe: Walloon Brabant extends over a relatively small territory south of the Belgian capital.
It’s a delightful region for a charming break, offering nature, the charm of old stone buildings, culture and real gems. Treat yourself to long weekend there to relax, disconnect and enjoy life.
It’s best to have a car here, to travel at your own pace although there is no long driving in this itinerary: the places we recommend are never very far from each other. Allow a few minutes to a maximum of half an hour for each trip.
Friday: relax at the hotel
Settle down at a remarkably eco-responsible hotel
Nothing like the Indrani Lodge in Loupoigne to disconnect from a hectic life. This medieval farmhouse, renovated into an eco hotel, aims to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
Ideally, arrive in the afternoon to take full advantage of its soothing atmosphere, luxurious yet unpretentious. This lodging, in the heart of the Brabant countryside, offers the best transition to a holiday feeling.
And breathe…
The Indrani Lodge often offers themed yoga classes on Friday afternoons. Perfect to let all the worries of normal life fade away, open your chakras and be fully at peace before the evening meal.
No yoga workshop planned during your stay? There’s a plan B. Entrust your body to expert hands for a divine massage or dive into the indoor swimming pool heated (without carbon) to a wonderful 29°C.
Make sure to check the dates of yoga classes and wellness workshops on the website, and book before your arrival.
Le soir, faites confiance au chef
No need to leave the hotel to enjoy the pleasures of the table. Éléments, the Indrani Lodge restaurant, will wow you with its local, refined and responsible cuisine giving pride of place to ultra-short circuits.
Faithful to the philosophy of the place, the products on your plate either come from the estate's orchard, garden and greenhouse, or from local organic farmers and producers in the region. The chef, Jérémy Wiame, loves to create menus evolving with the seasons.
Make sure to book well in advance.
Saturday: meditation, second hand gems and flavours
The serenity of ancient stones
Not far from your hotel, Villers-la-Ville abbey features a meditative path, nestled amidst its stunning ruined walls.
From the foot of the church to the Saint-Bernard chapel, there are 8 panels to be found, each displaying a quote and a mindful meditation exercise. Perfect to focus your attention on the present moment, observe and feel kindness for the world around you… and yourself.
A healthy, delicious lunch
Worked up an appetite? Head to Waterloo for a fantastic lunch at Cali. Gourmet bread, crunchy granola, soft French toast, tempting pastries: everything is homemade. Add to this an organic juice or lemonade or choose from the many varieties of coffee prepared with love.
Explore Waterloo
The city of Waterloo hides some treasures, including the VIF concept store, specialized in second hand goods. There you will find second-hand clothes and shoes, as well as vinyl records, decorations... And if you've always dreamed of a pair of customized sneakers, you've come to the right place.
Going to Waterloo without stopping by the Ferme de Mont-Saint-Jean would be a sin... This place, located a stone's throw from the famous Butte du Lion, is much more than a museum.
Want to bring back a beer from its micro-brewery? Or a gin, a whiskey distilled on site? Have a look at the Comptoir shop before leaving the farm.
Dinner with a view
Toit (roof) in Braine-l’Alleud, certainly lives up to its name: this restaurant
is perched on a rooftop above a showroom.
You will love its colourful Franco-Sardinian cuisine, its cozy atmosphere and a wood fire. Think seasonal ingredients and a good dose of originality.
If you like meat, don’t miss out on the T bone: exquisite to say the least.
Sunday: nature, brunch and museum
Le matin, déambuler en pleine nature et à travers les œuvres
After a good night’s sleep, how about a walk in one of the most beautiful parks in Wallonia? The Domaine régional Solvay offers 3 routes of approximately 5 km each, guiding you along gardens, sculptures, water points, wild plants and remarkable trees. You will even go to the edge of the Soignes forest.
Along the way, you will find the Folon foundation where you can immerse yourself among more than 350 creations by the Belgian multidisciplinary artist. His work is highlighted through an original scenography.
Brunch in an eco-farm
You read that right. At Les Terres d’Ici in La Hulpe, Stéphane concocts a brunch in symbiosis with nature. On the buffet, everything is fresh, healthy and delicious. The vegetables come straight from the vegetable garden, which you can visit.
As this brunch is quite popular, reservations are strongly recommended.
Explore the frontiers of art and science
Conclude the weekend with a visit to the Musée L in Louvain-la-Neuve. There, you can embark on a journey through centuries of human creation.
Here, a Buddha rubs shoulders with a medieval Christ, there ancient writings face calculating machines... The art works, natural history specimens, archaeological, ethnographic objects and scientific inventions will not leave you indifferent.
You can even give free reign to your own creativity in the engraving, sculpture and colour labs.
